Wiring (rewiring the WI-64 scheme) |
Well, nothing really valuable in this article. Just some details.
First, to the history. When I bought my guitar, the VCC scheme (it's supposed to convert gradually humbuckers to singles) on my guitar didn't function properly. That is, the change in sound was very strange (if it existed at all:))
I tried to rewire it to make a standard tone-control scheme (like the one on Les Pauls). But I didn's like the sound. There was a lack of high frequencies. So I just returned to the original VCC, set it to one position (humbucker mode) and never changed.
Recently I've got some free time, so I was able to check the scheme more accurately.
The scheme was pretty complicated (that is, I imagine it more simple.. and, finally, it didn't function in my case!) I don't know the purpose of employing coupled pots instead of normal ones. Maybe there was some significant idea behind this. I was too lazy to find out the reason, and I don't know if my final scheme is worse than original one.
I disassembled the coupled pots. Maybe I damaged them during the procedure, or they were broken some time before that... anyway, one half of each pot didn't function. That is, in fact they became just a normal single pots.

So I used them to make the final scheme depicted above. You can see the main idea of a tone pot in the scheme. When the pot is set to 0k position (as shown on the pic), the red wire and the green wire from the pickup are shorted. So the corresponding coil is not active, and therefore we get sound of only single coil (the one with black and white wires going from it). In the 500k position of the tone pot the sound is produced by both coils, that is the pickup works in humbucker mode.
Now everything works fine. Singles sounds like singles. With all its hum:) I really like the 'single' mode when playing with a clean sound. Very nice to have such a system. If anyone have a classic tone-control, I'd recommend to rewire it. Nothing is required except some basic soldering skill:)
