BOSS PW-10 V-Wah review (part 2) |
Features
As I said earlier, there are 8 preset effects. They are:
1) CUSTOM - you can create your own effect and place it here, so it's always at hand. The factory setting for CUSTOM is an effect called Double Resonance.
2) ADVANCED - a BOSS-developed effect, which in fact is an original WAH sound (they say that it 'provides a wider range of tone changes').
3) BASS MIX - a WAH for a bass-guitar! Yeah, you don't have to buy two pedals - 2 in 1, it's all here!
4) CBY-WAH - yeah, it's Dunlop CryBaby.
5) VO-WAH - surely, VOX V846.
6) MO-WAH - Morley Bad Horsie.
7) VOICE - at first I didn't like it, 'cause I tried it with dist. Try it on clean sound - it's cool!
8) UNI-V - Uni-Vibe effect. Very interesting thing. Somebody wrote that only this thing with some WAH deserves buying.
Creating CUSTOM effect means that you are basing your effect on some existing one. Then you adjust its Q(that is the frequency range of the filter) and Presence.
There are 8 drive effects:
1) BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone
2) Electro-Harmonix Big Muff
3) BOSS OD-1 Overdrive
4) Marshall Guv'nor
5) BOSS OD-1 Distortion
6) BOSS OD-2 Overdrive
7) BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver (this one seemes interesting for me)
8) Booster - just a booster:)
When you turn your pedal on, you can vary the amount of distortion with the DRIVE knob. So only one(!) drive can be used at a time. You are only able to select what drive it should be. The factory setting is Metal Zone. And when selecting dist type, you can also set threshold level for Noise Suppressor. Helpful thing.
All the things above are for a "Manual" mode, when the sound produced by the pedal is the one set by knobs. But you can store 3 different presets in memory, so in "Memory" mode you can switch between them. So, you are able to play, for example, one song with a CryBaby and Marshall Guv'nor, and for the next song you can switch to Uni-V with Big Muff. When you buy the pedal, the memory already contains 3 factory presets for you: VOX + Guv'nor, Uni-V + BluesDriver, and an "analog synth-like sound" - something original (Double Resonance + Muff Fuzz).
Also, there's such interesting feature like "Rear switch function setting". When working with memory, you have to switch like this: "Manual mode" -> "Memory 1" -> "Memory 2" -> "Memory 3" -> "Manual mode". So if you want to switch from Mem.1 to Manual, you have to press the heel switch 3 times. You are given the possibility to make another scheme: "Manual mode" -> "Memory" -> "Manual mode". So it's just like turning on and off some effect. Very useful.
Another feature - you may reset everything to factory settings (you know, when the memory is full of shitty effects created by you, you'll probably want to kill 'em:) ).
And in case your pedal behaves strangely, you may want to make a "Pedal Calibration" (some words later).
Of course, the pedal torque is adjustable by the screw.
If I didn't forget something, that's all (rather long list for a pedal that was meant to be simply a WAH-thing).
